I cofounded AI Policy Labs in 2017 to bridge the gap between Washington and the people developing artificial intelligence. Our mission was to advance AI education, research and policy, and help leaders prepare for its effects on work, communities and the economy.
Ending the Dangerous Disconnect Between DC and AI
At SXSW in March 2018, we brought together U.S. Representative Terri Sewell, Sarah Holland of Google, Partnership on AI executive director Terah Lyons and C&M International director Clark Jennings.
The discussion focused on how the AI and policy communities could engage earlier: which issues required urgent attention, how policymakers should prepare, and how the benefits of AI could be shared while its risks were reduced.
Defining a research agenda
We formulated a comprehensive research and engagement plan. It proposed mapping exposure to automation by congressional district and ZIP code, measuring policymakers’ understanding of AI, and researching workers’ attitudes toward technological change.
I developed the business plan, research agenda and funding materials, and helped initiate fundraising. The initiative did not progress to the full research program before all the cofounders took roles elsewhere.
